Make a Fillable Form in Word

Why bother faxing or mailing something back and forth when you can create the same form in Word so that it can be filled out on the computer, saved, and sent by email?

This is probably the best tutorial on creating fillable forms in Word 2003 on the web! Thanks a lot to the author!
Does anyone know if there is the same tutorial for Word 2007?

I loved this tutorial!! I didn’t use Word 2003 but 2007 and I can’t say enough about how simple he made it. I followed the steps one-by-one and created my form. Thank you so much for your assistance.

This tutorial gave me exactly what I needed to know at the moment I needed it as I struggled through my first attempt at a fillable form. (Modifying someone else’s form, actually.) I would dearly love to know if this gentleman has posted other tutorials (Access?) because this was EXTREMELY helpful! THANK YOU!

I was watching the tutorial, Make a filliable form in WORD, and when it hit the 12 min. mark it stopped? Could it be my computer or is there something I am doing wrong. Please review and advise. I have been looking for a tutorial like this for a while. I cannot find anybody who can do this. Chris

Very helpful tutorial! I knew most of the short cuts and how to manipulate the table cells, but there were a few tricks shown that I can add to my arsenal!! Really appreciated being shown how they all come together and also some visual tips that I didn’t even think about. Thanks again!

This tutorial helped me tremendously – great help. I do have one question:
Once my form was complete – protected and locked – a colleague tested it. When he enters text, the form does not expand in width, but he can continue adding text (in length) beyond the set boundary. We cannot see the text, but it doesn’t stop at the bottom of the page. I cannot figure out how to correct this. Any ideas?

    • Kurt Says:

      Debra:

Ah! Good catch. To prevent the text from exceeding the set boundary, you’ll need to to limit the number of characters the form field can accept. To do this:

      1. Unprotect the form
      2. Double click on the form field (a text field, I assume) you’d like to edit. The Text Form Fields Options box will appear.
      3. The value for “Maximum Length” is probably “Unlimited.” Change this to your desired character limit (e.g., 255). You’ll need to test out various character limits to determine the best one given the size of the boundary.
      4. Protect the form and test.

When you do this, it’s usually a good idea to inform your users that there is a limit so they can plan accordingly. So, consider adding something like “(255 character limit)” to the instructions next to that field.

        Hi Kurt,

        Great tutorial!
I have just about completed my form and it looks great, but have the same type issues as Debra. I followed your instructions above, but they are not solving my problem.
I have a comment box where clients need to describe the nature of a job. When typping in my form field, the text just continus past the right border of the form. I’m thinking I might have missed something really obvious in my formatting. Please help!

Dreamweaver has been lately my personal goto application for years. I truly do not know what I would undoubtedly do without having it. There were occasions when I initially began working with the program, and I believed it was way too sophisticated. Now I fly around it, and it has become a good asset in my tool box. Nonetheless thanks for the posting.

I knew how to do this, but not nearly as efficiently as I do now. There were problems I came across when making forms that I couldn’t really solve, so figured out a “work around,” but knew it wasn’t exactly right. This tutorial has made my job a lot easier! Thank you so much for being willing to share with all of us.
